About Alexis Greene

Alexis Greene is the author and editor of numerous books about theatre, including two biographies of notable women in the theater:: Emily Mann:  Rebel Artist of the American Theater and Lucille Lortel: The Queen of Off Broadway. As these biographies and many of Greene's other books demonstrate, she is dedicated to writing about the significance of, and the need for, women in the theater.

Greene's career spans acting, theater criticism, and teaching (she holds a PhD from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York), and she is on the board of the League of Professional Theatre Women (LPTW), a nonprofit organization that, among other goals, seeks "to increase opportunities and recognition for women in professional theatre." Born and raised in New York City, Greene lives both in Gotham and in upstate New York with her husband, Gordon Hough.
